Sitting in the cab, on my way back to home after an exceptionally long day at office (considering the fact that i worked 2 hours extra!), I turned on the Radio to get my daily dose of music. It was then that the over-enthusiastic RJ informed me that today i.e. 28 April is 'World Kiss Day'! So? I mean, do they expect us to go around kissing every stranger just because some good-for-nothing-but-madly-in-love fellow invented the day? I sometimes seriously wonder who on Earth had so much time to sit and think up all these 'days'! The list is just never-ending!
I could still accept it till World AIDS day or World Environment Day that were started with the purpose of speading awareness (though how much of it has been attained remains a mystery!). But what explanation could one provide for World Kiss Day or World Boxing Day? The extremes of emotion now need a day to be captured. Similarly our feelings for our loved ones can be expressed only on specific days. So on Father's Day-go tell your Dad that though you rob him all year yet on that very day, you bought a card (albeit the money was his again) for him and assure him that he is the only and original Dad you have and hopefully will have. Also tell him that from the next day onwards this love will evaporate and you will again lie to him that you are tutoring though you may be dating when he calls to find out your whereabouts. On Friendship Day, tie a pretty band around your friend's wrist and a couple of days later, go bitch about her sense of dressing.
The idea of celebrating so many meaningless days leads to just one explanation (this is completely a personal opinion)- mankind requires constant assurance of the fact that he is not alone, he too is loved, he too is hated and he too is spoken of. The initiative to unite the society through these various days could have probably been done in a better way had all these days served a certain purpose. Rose Day seems to be such a waste considering the fact that we are anyway losing out on greenery- wouldn't letting the flowers bloom on the trees be a better way to celebrate green than have a separate 'Go Green' day where a few 'thoughtful' people turn up on the road wearing green Tees and bearing placards that read 'Save Tree, Save life'.
Explain the need of Teddy Bear Day? Why have 'No Smoking' Day? Do we have to be told pointedly that cigarette smoking is injurious? Or will observing this day beat the shit out of the smoking lot and they will quit all at once? Unless the realization sinks deep down, all these days would remain merely, well 'days'! On Valentine's Day, by exactly how much percent does the love between a couple increase? Just for the records, 15th Feb. happens to be Slap Day!
Once again, the bottom line is the Earth does not need a day to be rescued or our love does not need a day to be expressed. It all lies in our heart and in our will- when and how to let it out is a decision we must wisely take. And spending a few bucks, celebrate the day and getting rid of it all is certainly not the solution.
